Borderland Lullaby

Jesse Miksic

Forthright child,
take the landscape into yourself,

    run fingers along the
    contours of a haptic geography

The ambience that has
dissolved into omniscience
    still remembers,    still points
    back to the point that
emanated it —

              The night
    is not so simple,
    is it?    Always diffuse,
a diffusion of the medium.

The gap between stars
has no index, being
    the same as the penumbra
    in every interior, including

The dim friction between
your bones —
             please be
tender, smother the universe
mercifully, because,

    Earnest elver, you have the
    unsimple night, and

Gentle
loves an absence.
