There are No Eggs in a NY Egg Cream

Mary Leonard

Once, a mouse rang my typewriter bell
The wingman radioed bail out

Hide inside flowered sun hats
Arms and legs askew

Be careful of plaids running every which way
The wingmanradioed bail out

Comb with bones of wild beasts
Chirp like tiny birds

Put an X through friends' faces
Always check the expiration date

Inhale, cough sputter laugh
Chirp like tiny birds

My dad spouted out advice
like tooling colors into copper

In 1944, one could not find eggs in Leningrad

Mary Leonard lives in an old school house overlooking the Rondout Creek in Kingston, NY. Away from her own personal blackboard, she teaches writing workshops for all ages through the Institute for Writing and Thinking and the MAT program at Bard College.
